Termites, sometimes called white ants (although not related to true ants), are part of the natural environment but can cause significant damage to timber structures.
Under the Building Regulations councils can designate areas in which buildings are likely to be subject to attack by termites. Any new building work (except for minor structures) in an area that is designated as subject to infestation must include special measures to resist termite attack.
Currently the Stonnington area is not regarded as subject to infestation by termites. However, termites may still cause damage to structures in the district, and homeowners and buyers should be aware of the risks.
If you are looking to buy an existing house we recommend you engage a professional to check the building for termites. The cost of the report will be nothing compared to the repair bill if you find out later that your house has termites.
The Victorian Building Authority has information on termites here.
Reporting termite activity
Although Council doesn’t treat termites we are interested in knowing about the levels of their activity for monitoring purposes. Any information you provide will be treated in confidence.
