Stonnington Indoor Sports Stadium

The need for additional indoor courts for netball, basketball and other indoor sports has been identified by the community and Council as a high priority for our growing city.

Orrong Romanis Recreation Centre is Council’s only purpose built indoor sports facility and it includes only two courts. An analysis of potential participation in indoor court sports shows that Stonnington requires at least four additional courts to meet current demand.

With 30,000 new residents forecast to be living in Stonnington by 2036, demand for sporting facilities will continue to increase. To address this need, the Stonnington Recreation Strategy (2014) highlights Council’s commitment to conducting a feasibility study into the construction of a new multi-court indoor stadium.

Indoor facilities can cater for a large number of participants and a new facility is particularly important to meet the needs of sports that are popular among women such as netball and basketball, which are currently under-catered for in Stonnington.

Location feasibility study 

In December 2016 Council passed a motion confirming the Chadstone Bowls Club site on Chadstone Road, Malvern East as the preferred location for a feasibility study that will investigate the merit of building a $25 million, multi-function indoor sports stadium catering to netball, basketball and other sporting users from across the municipality.

The feasibility study into this location is underway to provide Council with expert opinion, independent data and community feedback in order to make an informed decision on the merit of this location.

In July 2017 Council passed a motion to consider three possible alternate sites for an indoor stadium. These sites were land within the Malvern Valley Golf Course, Orrong-Romanis Reserve, and the car park opposite the East Malvern RSL Club. A report on these three sites was presented to Council on Monday 4 September. This report is available to read and will form part of the final feasibility study.
