Bring your picnic rug and slow dance moves, Sunset Sounds combines fantastic live music with some of Melbourne’s favourite food trucks.
Emma Donovan and The PutBacks
Acclaimed Indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The PutBacks come together to bring you an evening of heartfelt songs of soul, with a little twist of country and rock and roll. The music is fluid, live and raw and distinctly Australian.
Emma grew up singing church songs with her maternal grandparents on the North coast of New South Wales. Her first secular gigs were singing in The Donovans, a band comprised of her mother and five uncles.
Years later, after touring and recording with many of the mainstays of Indigenous music and developing as a solo artist in her own right, Emma met members of The PutBacks, and finally she found a band with the gritty blues soaked tones she had been looking for. She also found, in PutBacks bassist Mick Meagher, a co-writer and collaborator onthe soul songs she had been waiting a lifetime to write and sing. The results are well worth the wait and hopefully, only mark the beginning of this oh-so-right collaboration.
The PutBacks have established themselves as one of the premier funk outfits in Australia. In their career they have opened for The Bamboos, Electric Empire and Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes, as well as international funk and soul icons The Menahan Street Band featuring Charles Bradley, and Booker T Jones. In May 2012 The PutBacks were chosen as the support band for the infamous Prince after party at the Hi Fi Bar.
The PutBacks have collaborated with Emma Donovan and in November 2014 released their debut and critically acclaimed album Dawn on HopeStreet Recordings.
