The City of Stonnington has a rich history. It comprises the former cities of Malvern and Prahran, and covers part of the indigenous Boonwurrung language area associated with the Yalukit-willam clan.
The Stonnington History Centre is an archive dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the City of Stonnington and the former cities of Malvern and Prahran. The centre is a branch of the Stonnington Library and Information Service and is located at Northbrook, behind Malvern Library.

There are many heritage markers situated in the City of Stonnington. Some are placed on significant buildings or other sites, and recognize people or places of importance to the Stonnington area. Others acknowledge the traditional owners and educate our community about our Indigenous history.
