Press Release | 4 January 2018
Prahran’s Cato Street car park transformation will start on 15 January 2018. Kane Constructions has been appointed the project’s construction company after an extensive tender process.
City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Steve Stefanopoulos said he was looking forward to works starting on Stonnington’s largest and most ambitious construction project ever.
“This will transform the Cato Street car park into nearly ten thousand square metres of multifunctional urban parkland with underground parking,” said Mayor, Cr Stefanopoulos.
“We want to continue to enhance the vibrancy of our iconic Chapel Street precinct. Our vision is for this site to be recognised as a world-class public space that can be enjoyed by everyone. We will achieve this by transforming the existing car park into an active, vibrant, safe and exciting public open space.”
“Cato Square is a working name, and next year we’ll engage with our community about what to call the site once constructed, and also how to activate it with events and activities.
“The Cato Street car park will be unavailable during construction. However, Council is installing a parking guidance system that provides real-time information on alternative vacant car spaces in the precinct, as well as providing a free shuttle bus linking people to these car parks to support local business, shops, cafes and restaurants” said Cr Stefanopoulos.
Works are expected to be completed in the second half of 2019, with the two levels of underground car parking expected to be open earlier, while work continues above ground.
Council has been communicating with businesses bordering the Cato Street car park in the lead up to the construction and will soon write to residents and businesses to keep them informed about the progress of construction and parking options.
