Press Release | 3 November 2017
Cr Steve Stefanopoulos was elected the new Mayor of Stonnington at a Special Council meeting on Thursday 2 November.
Mayor Stefanopoulos served a previous term as an East Ward Councillor in 2004 before being re-elected in 2016 in the South Ward. He is looking forward to his first term in the new role.
“It’s an honour to be the newly elected Stonnington Mayor and I’m very grateful to my fellow Councillors for giving me this opportunity to represent our Council and our City,” Mayor Stefanopoulos said.
“As the new Mayor I am committed to working with the whole community and finding ways to bring everyone together to focus on what we can do to make Stonnington and even better place to live or work.
“I want to make sure Stonnington is a leading municipality in Australia, one that embraces change, accepts challenges no matter how great, and strives for the best outcome for all residents wherever possible.”
Mayor Stefanopoulos has lived in Stonnington for more than 40 years and is passionate about preserving its character and heritage.
“Capital works are critical and I look forward to seeing the transformation of Cato Square, the redevelopment of the Prahran Hall and the ongoing improvement and expansion of our open space,” Mayor Stefanopoulos said.
“While we have many great projects underway and ideas for more in the future, it’s extremely important that we continue to deliver quality and effective services that are vital to the wellbeing of our community.”
Stonnington Mayoral terms are for 12 months and the new Mayor will replace outgoing Mayor Cr Jami Klisaris.
