The City of Stonnington looks forward to welcoming a very special Centenarian to the Mayor’s silver service morning tea for centenarians on Friday July 20 at the Malvern Town Hall.
Stonnington long term resident Mr William Rudd OAM (Bill) celebrated his 100th Birthday in December 2017. The veteran soldier, prisoner of war, husband and father of four has always demonstrated a love of life and adventure.
Stationed at El Alamein, Egypt in 1942 Bill found himself alongside 3,200 prisoners of war (POW) aboard an Italian cargo ship when it was torpedoed by a British submarine off the coast of the Greek islands. Interned in an Italian POW camp, Bill escaped over the Swiss Alps during winter, meeting his wife Caty in the process.
Caty and Bill were married for 69 years, returning live in South Yarra after the World War II to raise their four children. Bill remains a tireless historian, researching the stories of over 2,000 Australian POW in Italy during World War II.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, will join Bill and other Stonnington centenarians at a special silver service morning tea to celebrate their milestone.
If someone you know is turning 100 (or more) on or before 20 July and is a resident of Stonnington (or has been within the past 12 months) please let Megan Andriske know on 8290 3224 by 1 June so we can invite and include them for this wonderful annual event.
