International Day of People with Disability

Celebrating inclusion and diverse abilities through art

To celebrate International Day of people with Disability 2016, the City of Stonnington displayed a range of community art submissions at the Phoenix Park Community Centre in Malvern East from 3-10 December 2016 at the Life in my Community art exhibition. We received over 40 fantastic artworks from local community members. You can check them out in the video below!

Breaking down Barriers: improving access to legal justice system for people with disability

Many people with disability face multiple complex barriers to accessing the justice system. In June 2016 the City of Stonnington partnered with St Kilda Legal Service to hold an innovative and informative forum. Speakers included Jelena Popovic, Deputy Chief Magistrate; Deidre Griffiths, Principal Solicitor Villamanta Disability Legal Rights Service; in addition to Colin Hiscoe and Susan Arthur, Reinforce Self Advocacy Group. To improve access to this information, we have filmed the panels and presentations. Please click here to watch the videos.

Hosting accessible events

A guide for organisers has been developed by the Meetings and Events Industry of Australia in collaboration with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC). The guide can be downloaded here .

This guide is designed to help those responsible for organising events to ensure its accessibility for all people in the community. The guide contains practical information and advice on how to make events accessible for people of all abilities, whether they are presenters, sponsors or participants.
