Council's website aims to provide convenient, accessible online services and information, and to facilitate two-way communication, consultation and engagement With the Stonnington community.

Providing residents with a website that is accessible to all, intuitive, user-friendly, and leading edge in its design and functionality, are key priorities for the City of Stonnington.

Accessibility

The City of Stonnington's website has been designed and developed to meet the Level AA rating of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 of accessibility.

Council has taken the following steps to achieve this goal:

  • The site design uses colours to identify sections on a page, and white space to break up information and make the site easy on the eye
  • Colour testing the site design for sufficient contrastFunctionality to increase or decrease text size on all pages
  • Reduction and eventual removal of PDF documentsSimple and clear naming of images and documents for easy reference
  • Testing of pages using assistive technologies Use of headings and labels on tables so that assistive technologies can read the informationHorizontal and vertical menu structures to assist in browsing the site
  • A range of search tools including – keyword searh, A-Z Index, Site Map as well as 'I want to...' options
  • Improved Service Directories, with information within the web page, rather than as an attached document.

The City of Stonnington is committed to making the City a welcoming place for people with disabilities.

  • The City of Stonnington makes all its publications available in alternative formats such as CD, large print, Plain English, or Braille, upon request.
  • The City of Stonnington accepts the Companion Card. It also makes acceptance of the Companion Card at council sponsored events a condition of sponsorship.
  • The City of Stonnington ensures all Council owned buildings are accessible.
  • The City of Stonnington provides Auslan interpreters on request.
  • The City of Stonnington provides a hearing loop in the Malvern Town Hall Council Chamber and can set up and provide use of Councils portable hearing loop at Council run events upon request.
  • The City of Stonnington produces an audio version of In Stonnington every two months and our libraries have a range of audio books. You may request large print or audio publications by contacting Council on 8290 1333.

  • The City of Stonnington now uses recognized international access symbols in communications materials.

Closed Captioning (CC)

Closed Captioning (CC) (commonly known as subtitles) enables people who are deaf or hard of hearing to read a transcript of the audio portion of a video, film, exhibition or other presentation.

Opened Captioning (OC)

This symbol indicates that captions, which translate dialogue and other sounds in print, are displayed on the videotape, movie, television program or exhibit audio. Open Captioning is preferred by many, including deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, and people whose second language is English.

Special Features of This Site

Community Consultation has played an important role in the development of this website. Through the findings from interviews, focus groups and discussions with residents, Council redeveloped the website to make it both user friendly and enhance Council's ability to engage with residents. The website is being continually enhanced to meet community needs.

The site has a number of new features that aim to ensure a better user experience. Some features are already in place, with more being launched over the coming months:

  • Google Maps to easily identify places of interest
  • E-services – enabling you to complete services online (such as payments, job applications, planning register information and submitting forms online)
  • Consultation and Engagement Portal including polls, discussion forums, social media, surveys, forms and multimedia (video and audio files)
  • An integrated events calendar (Combining community, Council, Chapel Off Chapel and other events)
  • A mobile website is currently being developed to enhance access through the use of smart phones and i-phones.
