Local Newspapers

All library branches hold the current year of local newspapers. 

From the year 2000, the Stonnington Leader is available online from at least two newspaper databases: Newsbank (2000 --) and ProQuest (2007 --).  These databases may be keyword searched.  In 2012, the State Library of Victoria held a subscription to Proquest, and both Boroondara and Moonee Valley library services subscribed to Newsbank.  Although access is restricted to library members, people may join any public library in Victoria provided they have proof of Victorian residence.

Format

Some old newspapers are held in hard copy, and these are indicated by "hc". Others are in microfilm, and indicated by "mf".

All microfilm copies are at Toorak/South Yarra Library, and for conservation reasons, these should be used rather than the hard copy. 

At present, only one  local newspaper is available online: the Malvern Standard (see below), which may be accessed via the National Library's Trove search engine.  It is anticipated that other titles will be digitised in the coming years.  Note that the Melbourne Argus (1848-1956) has been digitised and may be useful in coverage of significant local events.

Newspapers that were distributed across the whole of Stonnington, are indicated by "S". Those distributed to Stonnington west of Kooyong Road, are indicated by "P" (Prahran), and those distributed to Stonnington east of Kooyong Road are indicated by "M" (Malvern).

Indexing

Most newspapers are not indexed.  The advertisements in the Prahran Telegraph (1866-1930) have been indexed for a single issue in March and September of each year, and this information entered to the Local History catalogue.  Many advertisers ran on-going advertisements in the Telegraph, making it unnecessary to index the classifieds for every issue of the newspaper.

Work is progressing on the analytical indexing of the non-advertising content of the Prahran Telegraph, including court reports, Council reports, editorials, public notices, local issues of the day etc. As at January 2012, the years 1866-1875 have been completed, comprising more than 3,000 discrete catalogue records.  The court reports for 1880-1882 have also been indexed in detail.
