Phoenix Park
The Phoenix Park precinct in Malvern East is a true community hub and now houses Council ’s newest public artwork . Phoenix Park is a testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve. For three years the City of Stonnington, residents and local business have been working together to construct a community masterpiece.
In November 2000 the park won the title of Outstanding On-Going Project at the Keep Australia Beautiful City Pride Awards.
The park features a community centre, library, skating facilities, open space and a spectacular adventure playground.

An Unfolding Space
An Unfolding Space is a wonderful addition to the precinct that perfectly complements the landscape.
According to artist, Emily Floyd, An Unfolding Space is a monument to the experience of childhood and the potential of community.
“The colourful cast metal peacocks and blocks symbolise the unfolding possibilities of books, learning and knowledge. The two phrases of utopian text, ‘A Community Garden’ and ‘An Unfolding Space’ suggest Phoenix Park is a community space that is transformed and developed when locals come together to learn, grow and exchange ideas”, Emily said.
City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said “Great public artworks become features that generate a sense of ownership, a sense of place and help cultivate community identity.
“In Stonnington, Council is working towards creating a public art collection that is progressive, innovative and stimulating that explores a variety of mediums, scales and approaches. An Unfolding Space is a fitting addition to this collection.”
The Phoenix Park precinct is the heart of Malvern East, providing a wonderful location for the community to meet, learn from one another, attend activities, recreate and form close bonds with each other. With the brand new Phoenix Park Children’s Hub, existing community centre, library, children’s adventure playground and primary school, Phoenix Park is a stand-out community precinct.
