Synthetic Sports Surface Feasibility Study

Council is currently developing a Synthetic Sports Surface Feasibility Study to assess and develop clear strategies for the current and future provision of sports surfaces throughout the municipality. Emerging issues includingfield increases in sports participation, usage and demand trends, drought concerns and the need to provide physical activity opportunities to build a healthy community have been the main drivers for Council.

With limited land available for additional sports fields, parks or open spaces within Stonnington, the study will assess participation demands, understand the extent that existing facilities can be further utilised to meet demand and address the impact of the drought and water restrictions on natural turf playing fields.

By exploring the opportunities and feasibility of installing synthetic sporting surfaces the study will provide Council with direction in relation to potential locations, type and range of surfaces available, management models, financial requirements, potential users, environmental considerations, potential for strategic partnerships and the benefits of synthetic sports surfaces.
