Give our Streets the Green Light Petition
Streetlights across Victoria are paid for by local Government. The existing streetlights are outdated, very energy inefficient and expensive. Upgrading to modern technology would improve the energy efficiency of streetlights by 70 percent, reduce electricity costs by 70 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent. However, the cost to do this is expensive.
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), in conjunction with 41 Victorian Councils, has run a program called "Give Our Streets The Green Light" seeking to pressure both State and Federal Government's to contribute one third of the cost to changing over our streetlights.
The petition was forwarded to the Victorian State Government on 31 August 2010.
Your support is needed to encourage the Victorian and Federal Governments to help local Councils with the high upfront costs of switching to more energy efficient streetlights.
