Detox Your Home allows you to dispose of unwanted chemicals safely and conveniently.detox home

Stonnington Waste Transfer Station

Empty paint cans, car batteries, household batteries, mobile phones and all types of lighting including fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and incandescent bulbs can be taken to the Stonnington Waste Transfer Station for recycling.

Mobile Service

Sustainability Victoria offers a Detox Your Home mobile service throughout Victoria. Go to Mobile Detox Service to find out about the upcoming collections throughout Victoria.

The following items can be accepted at a Mobile Service. They can be found;

In the house:

  • Kitchen/bathroom cleaners
  • Floor-care products
  • Ammonia based cleaners
  • Aerosol cans
  • Nail polish and remover
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Batteries
  • Insect spray

In the shed:

  • Fuels
  • Paints and paint stripper
  • Weed killer
  • Pool chemicals
  • Gas cylinders
  • Fertiliser
  • Rat poison
  • Solvents and glues

In the car:

  • Coolant/antifreeze
  • Brake and transmission fluid
  • Car body filler
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Car wax
  • Car batteries

* All containers must be less than 20 litres or 20 kilograms. Empty containers will not be accepted.

The following items will not be accepted at Detox Your Home:

  • Motor oil (this can be taken to the Stonnington Waste Transfer Station - enter via Carroll Crescent and Weir Street)
  • Chemicals used by businesses for industrial and commercial purposes (check the Yellow Pages under "waste reduction and disposal services")
  • Farm chemicals (visit Chemclear or freecall 1800 008 182 for collection of unwanted rural chemicals)
  • Waste asbestos (visit the EPA website or call EPA on 03 9695 2722 for advice)
  • Ammunition (ammunition should be taken to your local police station for safe disposal)

Permanent Facility

Paint, motor oil and BBQ gas cylinders can be dropped off year round at one of the permanent facilities located at specific council premises. Go to Permanent Detox Facilities to find out where these are.

The following items will be accepted at a Permanent Facility:

  • Paint
  • Motor oil
  • Car and household batteries
  • Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent globes (CFLs)
  • BBQ gas cylinders up to 9kg (check with facility)

These site will not accept the following;

  • Containers larger than 20 litres
  • LPG gas automotive fuel tanks chemicals used for commercial and industrial purposes
  • Household chemicals not listed above.

Transport Tips

There are a number of safety precautions you should observe when transporting chemicals including;

  • Travel with your car windows open
  • Ensure container lids are tightly fitted
  • Wrap old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking
  • Place liquid containers in a tray or plastic bucket to avoid spills
  • Pack powders and solids securely
