Rain Gardens

Before urbanisation and increased hard surfaces, rainwater would soak into the ground and gradually reachour creeks and rivers.

Urbanisation has increased the amount of hard surfaces (roads, paths, roof tops), which means runoff flows to the closest stormwater drain and flows directly into our rivers and creeks. This runoff carries pollutants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, fine sediments and litter.

One of the treatments that can be built around the home are raingardens that have water directed into them from a downpipe or paved area. They are designed to slow down rainfall during a rain event. By utilising a free draining sand, water can flow through the system which cleans the water and also solves the issue of flooding.
