Parking in Stonnington

Commercial Areas (eg shopping strips)

Stonnington is the home of some of Melbourne's busiest suburban shopping strips, village trading areas and the Chadstone Shopping Centre. In such areas the needs of builders must be balanced against the needs of traders, customers, residents and other local workers.

For builders requiring regular contractor parking (eg for major construction sites) in public roads, special works zone permits can be issued to allow the sign-posted restrictions to be changed so trades and construction vehicles can gain access without breaching parking and traffic regulations.

A new class of permit has also been introduced for short term requirements in busy commercial areas. This overcomes the inconvenience and nuisance of watching the clock and having to shift vehicles while in the middle of a job. A time-based fee however applies. See section on Local Law Works Zones.

Residential Streets

Many of the quieter residential streets in Stonnington have restricted residential parking. Council can however issue trades parking permits (pdf format Tradesperson parking permit application.pdf (75.71 KB)) on a monthly basis. These are available from Council's Customer Service desks at the Prahran and Malvern Town Halls.

Local Law Permits

Please refer to the Local Law permit pages for detailed information about when special permits are required, what is required and how much it will cost.
