Council Policy for Intervention into Private Building Surveyor Functions
In June 2004 Stonnington Council adopted a special policy as to how it and its Municipal Building Surveyor would react to complaints or questions about building work where a private building surveyor had been appointed for the related building control functions.
The policy was necessary because the Building Act provides councils with an over-arching responsibility for building control matters, even where a private building surveyor is carrying out functions. Without a policy there can be confusion and uncertainty as to who does what in certain circumstances.
