Smoke Alarms

All houses, flats, hotels and other residential units must have smoke alarms complying with AS 3786-1993 installed at or near the ceiling of each storey. Where installed in connection with a building permit, smoke alarms must be hard-wired to mains power. In cases of simple retro-fitting they may be simply battery operated.

Basic battery operated smoke alarms can be purchased from most hardware stores for under $10.

Who is responsible?

The incumbant property owner. As this requirement has been in place since 1 February 1999 previous land owners may also have been responsible, however if this was not met the new owner must install the necessary fittings immediately.

The Municipal Building Surveyor may issue an on-the-spot fine of 2 penalty units ($200) or prosecute any owner of a house or unit in the municipality who has not complied.
