Swimming Pools and Spas
Domestic pools and spas throughout Victoria must be provided with safety barriers to prevent unsupervised small children from accessing the pool or spa area. This includes those in-ground and above ground and internal and external to the home.
According to Council records there are 2834 known pools and spas in Stonnington - which grows by about 30 a year.
Since 8 April 1991 all new pools and spas have needed barriers in accordance with the Building Code of Australia. Since 1994 barriers have been required for all the older pools and spas through special retro-fitting requirements under the Building Regulations.
The legislation also requires that all pool and spa barriers must be maintained to perform as intended.
Council carries out an audit program to monitor and enforce the above requirements.
