Local Law Permits
Under the Local Government Act, municipal councils in Victoria are empowered to make their own local laws. Before 1989 these were known as by-laws.
Stonnington has embraced all of its controls under one Local Law document, divided into parts and clauses.
Breaches are prosecutable as summary criminal offences at the Magistrates Court and any guilty finding may be recorded as a conviction (formal record), at the discretion of the magistrate.
The Local Law includes controls over certain building-related activities to regulate their impact on local amenity. The Building Control Services unit administers these and allied functions under the Road Management Act. Permits and consents are required for the following:
