Building Control Intervention Filter Criteria (BCIFC)

The BCIFC is a Council policy for dealing with complaints regarding building work where a private building surveyor, rather than the Municipal Building Surveyor, has been engaged to carry out the building permit functions.

Council officers will deal with such complaints in accordance with the BCIFC. There may of course be instances where the situation is such that a departure from the policy is warranted.

The BCIFC provides for a range of responses by Council depending on the nature of the complaint - from referring the complainant directly to the private building surveyor, to direct interventionist action (in circumstances such as where there is an immediate danger to persons or property).

In some instances Council may refer details to the Building Practitioners Board for inquiry into practitioner conduct or to the Building Commission for supervision or investigation. The response utilised will depend on the circumstances of the complaint and the application of the BCIFC to those circumstances.

Members of the public can also make complaints regarding a building practitioner direct to the Building Commission or the Building Practitioners Board.

Further information on the Building Commission and the Building Practitioners Board can be obtained from the Building Commission.
