Home Burglary Prevention

  1. Lock doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes;
  2. Get rid of any obstacles that create hiding places for burglars, ensure that your fence and trees / shrubs do not block the view to your house from the street;
  3. Lock your garden shed. Keeps tools and ladders secured so they cannot be used to break into your house;
  4. Lock doors and windows when you are at home, but don't deadlock yourself into your house (in case of emergencies);
  5. Leave spare keys with a trusted friend or family member, never leave keys outside the house;
  6. Make a list of your property and valuables;
  7. Close curtains at night; and turn on a light when you leave the house at night, this looks like someone is home;
  8. When away from home organise someone to collect your mail and put out your bins for a 'lived in' look;
  9. If you buy expensive goods such as a TV, cut the box into pieces before you put into the recycling bin; and
  10. Fix broken fences to ensure that burglars cannot gain access to or from your property.
