Council may issue permits to work outside hours with relation to activities over streets (eg. deliveries and setting up temporary structures). It has no power to issue permits to work outside hours within properties.

  • Building Permit Application Forms

Under State legislation a building permit is required before commencement of most building work. The definition of 'building work' in the legislation includes new building, demolition and/or alteration. In many cases the builder or architect/draftsperson obtains the permit on behalf of the property owner.

  • Cranes over public land

Applications should be lodged at least 2 weeks prior to proposed commencement of work to enable processing. Where an application relates to full street closure it should be lodged at Council at least 3 weeks prior to proposed commencement to enable Council to organise written notification to affected properties.

  • Domestic Animal Business Permit

A Domestic Animal Business Permit is required from Council if you wish to conduct a business such as: Pet shop Boarding establishment for cats or dogs; Breeding and rearing establishment for cats or dogs;  Dog training establishment; or an Animal shelter.

  • Hoardings and barricades over Council land

Hoardings and barricades are a common sight around building sites. They protect the public and secure the site when unattended.

Stonnington's Local Law itself does not specify when hoarding or the taking of precautions to protect the safety of the public are required. It simply requires that when hoardings etc are to be erected over Council land a permit must be obtained.

  • Occupancy Permits

An occupancy permit is required before use of a building when a building permit prescribes that one is necessary. An occupancy permit is only to be issued when a building, or part of a building, is 'suitable to occupy'.

A second form of occupancy permit exists for places of public entertainment - theatres, nightclubs, halls, sportsgrounds and certain large temporary structures (refer to the more detailed definitions in the Act and Regulations).
