Pets and Wildlife

Pets and wildlife can bring much joy to family life. For the benefit of both pet and owner, the City of Stonnington endorses Responsible Pet Ownership. This includes registering your pet and abiding by Council laws regarding walking your dog on a lead and disposing of their waste appropriately.

The City of Stonnington General Local Law 2008 (No.1) allows for the keeping of a specific number of domestic animals without a permit.

Exercising your dog off-lead conditions

Dogs may be exercised off-lead in nominated parks provided the owner carries a chain, cord or leash, sufficient to bring the dog under effective control if the dog behaves in a manner which threatens any person or animal.

Dogs are prohibited from:

  • Sports grounds during sports club and school training and match times; and
  • Defined children's playground areas.
