C187 - New Residential Zones

Planning zones stipulate what development and uses can be built where and the State Government has introduced new residential zones for Victoria. This represents one of the biggest planning reforms in Victoria's history.

At its meeting on 16 December 2013, Stonnington Council adopted a position on the new residential zones to be submitted to the Minister for Planning for approval as part of an amendment (C187) to the Stonnington Planning Scheme. The decision follows an extensive period of consultation with the community, during September and October 2013.

The request for approval of the new residential zones was lodged with the Minister for Planning on 24 December 2013. Council is now awaiting a decision. To view the Council zones and schedules lodged with the Minister visit the ‘Quick Links’ to the right of this page.

What are the New Residential Zones?

Stonnington only has one residential zone at the moment, called the 'Residential 1 Zone'. This zone will be replaced by three new zones:

  • Neighbourhood Residential Zone

Restricts housing growth and protects neighbourhood character.

  • General Residential Zone

Preserves neighbourhood character while allowing modest housing growth.

  • Residential Growth Zone

Encourages more diverse housing and land use.
