About Soundslike Productions
A little about us
In the beginning the idea was simple - hold a successful music event for the young people of Stonnington. But the process of turning this idea into reality proves again and again to be an exciting challenge.
Starting life in the late 90's the City of Stonnington's youth events committee met each year to plan and run its annual youth festival 'Live: From Dusk 'till Dark'. This annual event was a huge success, however the LIVE committee dreamt of more. It dreamt of golden beaches and turquoise waters and a day where all ages events, planned and organised by young people, were as bountiful and beautiful as the grains of sand on its golden beach.
The pull of this dream was so powerful that in 2003 the LIVE committee transformed with one mission - to provide young people in Stonnington with high quality all ages music and cultural events.
And so, Soundslike Productions was born.
The Crew
Behind closed doors at a not-so-secret location, sit nine crew on a couch, sometimes eight, sometimes ten... it all depends. We're all on the Soundslike crew for different reasons, some because its valuable work experience, others just love the music, but when it all comes down to it most simply come for the food!!
We're a diverse bunch. Diverse in age, musical taste, schooling background and interests, and this shows in the variety of events we put our hand to. Some like rock, indie, punk or hip hop, some are interested in productions & recording and some simply love organising events. Sometimes crew members will have ongoing involvement for a bunch of events and others just want to help out with one sort of gig... be it hip hop, fashion shows, skate comps or others.
The Events
Over the years Soundslike Productions has had many successes working with bands such as Gyroscope, Bodyjar, Illzilla, Illy, The Galvatrons, Frenzal Rhomb, Neon Love, Mirror House Antics and more.
Our skate comps have featured the current world number one vert rider Renton Millar along with Tony Hawk, who needs no introduction.
Our cultural events have featured a range of young fashion designers and given them the opportunity to work with and learn from the best in the industry, including Jenny Banister.
Annually Soundslike Productions partakes in the Push Stage at the St Kilda Festival, hosts a Push Start Battle of the Bands heat, co-ordinates the Expression Fashion Gala, supports the local VIVA youth festival and skate comp and has more recently branched into the realm of hip hop, hosting the spectacular Mix Tape '09.
Highlights
- Working with the Cultural Infusion Freeza crew to put on Mix Tape '09;
- Building that partnership between local inner city communities to organise and run a hip hop event that showcased headliners such as Illzilla & Illy along with battles for local MC's, breakdancers and beatboxers was rad; and
- Having Lawrence Leuing as a guest judge for the breaking battles.
