Our pools are going green.

Public Place Recycling is now at the Aquatic Centres.
The City of Stonnington has improved waste management at the Prahran Aquatic Centre and Harold Holt Swim Centre by installing 17 new dual bin units, allowing for patrons to dispose of both waste and recyclables. These bin units, which contain recycled aluminium content, make it easy for patrons to recycle at the centres.
This is the first Public Place Recycling project to be undertaken by the City of Stonnington and a great opportunity to trial such a concept. The City of Stonnington received a grant of $20,000 from Sustainability Victoria to assist with the project.
Recyclable items currently make up about 40% of the waste produced at the Centres, and through recycling, this can all be diverted from landfill. Recycling reduces waste to landfill and also saves natural resources and energy, consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Producing items from recycled materials uses less water and energy than producing them from raw fibres.
Items which can be recycled at the Aquatic Centres include;
- plastic bottles and containers (numbers 1 - 7)
- milk and juice cartons
- aluminium cans
- coffee and tea cups
- paper
Items which cannot be recycled include;
- food wrappers (including ice-cream wrappers)
- food scraps
- plastic bags
- plastic cutlery
- serviettes
So when you're next at a Stonnington Aquatic Centre, think green and do your bit for the environment!
