Stonnington's Indigenous History

Indigenous History Markers

Council has developed 11 Indigenous History Markers to acknowledge the traditional owners and educate our community about our Indigenous history.  The markers are based on the research report "An Indigenous History of Stonnington" (2006) and are located in Kooyong, Prahran, South Yarra and Windsor.  The Yarra River plays a central role with four of the markers located along the Yarra Trail.

The markers provide historical information about local clans and their lifestyle, significant individuals, key locations and important events and contain images depicting the historic sites.

The Indigenous History Markers Guide provides a brief history and map showing the location of the markers throughout the City.

The markers were launched by the Mayor, Cr Claude Ullin on Friday 21 August 2009 following a Welcome to Country by Shane Charles representing the Boonwurrung people.

Indigenous History Project

In 2006 Council engaged Dr Ian Clark and Laura Kostanski from the University of Ballarat to undertake research into the indigenous history of Stonnington, a key action of Council's Reconciliation Action Plan 2005-2010.

The research resulted in a report titled "An Indigenous History of Stonnington - A report to the City of Stonnington" (2006).  The report was subsequently summarised into "Stonnington's Indigenous History" and launched on 12 July 2007 during NAIDOC Week.

The summary report "Stonnington's Indigenous History" contains a brief history, key people, indigenous clans, countries and languages and significant sites.

An Indigenous History poster was developed and distributed as an insert in Council's publication, Stonnington News in September 2008.  A copy of the poster/insert is available below.

The full report "An Indigenous History of Stonnington" is available for viewing at Council's Libraries located in Prahran, Malvern, South Yarra and Phoenix Park.

Contact Council's Corporate & Community Planning Unit on 8290 1333 for a copy of Stonnington's Indigenous History or for further information.
