Nesting Boxes
In Australia bird species and mammals are varied and unique and a large proportion of them are dependant on hollows in trees for shelter and nesting. Tree hollows have been dramatically reduced as a result of urbanisation and there are less spaces for our native birds and mammals to breed and shelter.
In expanding suburban areas nesting boxes can provide a solution to the lack of tree hollows giving our native animals a home and can be specifically designed to attract specific species of birds and mammals and discourage any pests or vermin.
In recent months the City of Stonnington commissioned Practical Ecology to produce a Biodiversity Review to identify sites with biodiversity values and generate specific actions for further environmental enhancement.
Nesting boxes are considered an effective way to increase the biodiversity values of vegetated areas and Council will soon be rolling out a program for the installation and monitoring of nesting boxes in the following areas for concentrated environmental enhancement:
- Urban Forest Reserve
- Glenburn Bend Park
- Muswell Bend Park
- Glen Iris Wetlands and extension to Glen Iris Wetlands
- Darling Park
- Malvern Valley Golf Course
Nesting boxes will be custom made for the following species;
- Boobook Owl
- Kookaburra
- Micro Bat
- Lorikeet
- Rosella
