Glen Iris Wetland Redevelopment

The Glen Iris Wetlands project, part of the Lower Yarra Stormwater Action Plan, will improve the treatment of stormwater and create habitat for the foraging, breeding and sheltering of native animal and bird species.

The wetland system will passively treat stormwater from the Hedgley Dene main drain to improve the quality of water that enters Gardiners Creek and ultimately the Yarra River. Treatment will remove a range of pollutants contained in the water.

The Glen Iris Wetlands currently consists of two relatively deep ponds and a small pond interconnected by rock weirs and surrounded by vegetation. Although the wetland provides biodiversity and aesthetic value to the area, it is currently ineffective as a water quality treatment measure.

Native species will be planted throughout the wetlands and on the pond edges and some plants will be salvaged and replanted into the new design.

The stormwater treatment wetland and storage pond will be 5,345mē, which is slightly larger than the existing two ponds. The wetland and pond will remove approximately 12 percent of nitrogen and 21 percent of phosphorous from the water entering the wetlands from Hedgley Dene drain. Prior to this project, these pollutants would have directly entered Gardiners Creek.

The project will commence in the coming months and conclude by the end of the year.
