Stonnington Depot

The new Stonnington Depot in Tooronga Road Malvern has incorporated a number of water and energy saving features that will reduce its ecological footprint.

Rainwater will be captured from the roofs of all buildings and stored in underground tanks with an 185,000 litre capacity. This water will be used to flush toilets and to supply the truck wash unit.

The truck wash unit is water efficient and will reduce water consumption by 85 percent (estimated saving of 950,000 litres per year) when compared to a conventional truck wash facility.

Stormwater, running off the hard surfaces on the site (such as carparks), will be directed to a series of raingardens and vegetated swales where it will filter through carefully selected substrates (these will aid in removing any pollutants) before entering the conventional drainage system and being discharged into Gardiners Creek.

The office block has wall and ceiling insulation and double glazed windows to minimise heat loss in winter and heat entry in summer.  In addition lighting is provided by the latest generation energy efficient fluorescent lamp technology (i.e. T5 lamps) that use approximately 30 percent less electricity than conventional fluorescent lamps.
