Building Works

Construction has begun on the new Phoenix Park Children's Centre. During December in ground plumbing and electrical communications were installed, and the concrete pour for the floor slab commenced.

Background on Phoenix Park Children's Centre

In June 2008 Council made the decision to relocate children's services currently located in Bowen Street to a new purpose built children's hub.

The Children's Centre at Phoenix Park will provide a significant improvement over the existing, ageing facilities at Bowen Street and will include:

• Relocation of the existing 2x25 place Fenwick Street kindergarten into 2x30 place kindergarten rooms
• Relocation of May Armstrong Child Care Centre increasing from 35 places to 60 places
• Relocation of the existing Fenwick Maternal and Child Health Centre
• Relocation of the existing multipurpose room at Fenwick Maternal and Child Health Centre, for use by Playgrounds and community agencies
• The Centre will also provide a connection with the existing community centre, library, children's adventure playground and the local primary school
• The buildings have been designed using best practice in consultation with the services and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, to ensure they provide the best environment for children
• The design has been developed in consultation with the services and their committees. Council will continue to provide opportunities for existing and future facility users and parents to gain a greater understanding of the plans and scale of the redevelopment and development process
• It is anticipated that the building will be completed in 2010
• Community feedback has prompted the following changes:
• Indoor and outdoor play spaces have been increased and the functionality of rooms and common space has been improved.
• Children's rooms in the new centre are increased in size from the existing services and are above the minimum regulatory requirements
• The new building provides for easier access for parents with prams and disabilities
• Inclusion of a new, specially designed multi-purpose room with outdoor space - which has been doubled from the initial concept drawings
