ENSEMBLE MUNDO directed by ALEX PERTOUT with NILUSHA BAEDER and special guest singer-songwriter KUTCHA EDWARDS

This eclectic large ensemble gathers regularly to develop and perform material from many lands. The ensemble features an array of instrumentalists and vocalists to produce its special global sound, which also pays tribute to the music of this land by featuring works by indigenous composers. For this performance the ensemble is proud to feature the outstanding artist Kutcha Edwards in a program covering works by Edwards, Pertout, Lewis. Geia, Santamaria and Jobim.

Kutcha

Kutcha Edwards

Kutcha is a Mutti Mutti man, born in Balranald, New South Wales, Australia. He was 'stolen' at 18 months and denied his birthright to grow with his family, to experience his culture and to live his identity. As a teenager he was reunited with his family and so his journey began to retrieve his identity and reclaim what was denied him, his family and his community.

Throughout his youth Kutcha looked for opportunities to be informed about his history and involved in his community. Being a keen sportsman Kutcha quickly became a valued member of the Fitzroy Stars Football Club and was selected for the Victorian 'All Stars' at the age of 18. His sense of community was heightened as another pathway presented itself to him through Koorie Kollij.  For the last 19 years Kutcha has worked in the community at various organisations and during this period Kutcha developed a strong interest in working with Koori youth. The key issue that motivates his work is to empower youth with a strong sense of self worth, self-expression, self-belief and self-determination.

In recent years Kutcha has experienced personal success through his music. For many years he was the lead singer in Blackfire and has since formed Kutcha Edwards and Band. His motivation is simple...to heal the spirit, strengthen community and family. What Kutcha shares with his people is a connection, a belonging. It is his gift that in his own journey of healing he is able to help heal others.

ENSEMBLE TONOS directed by GEOFF HUGHES

Originally a guitar ensemble set up to introduce improvising guitarists to a wide range of composed repertoire, Tonos has evolved into a performing ensemble that explores the vast melodic, and textural possibilities that emerge from the combination of acoustic guitars, electric guitars and effects. The repertoire ranges from works by Steve Reich and Astor Piazzola to more experimental and free platforms. For this performance will feature eight players especially selected from the larger ensemble

Nichaud Fitzgibbon - Mood Swing

Nichaud Fitzgibbon Melbourne's favourite jazz stylist performs at The Stonnington Jazz Festival to showcase her signature sassy sound on new material from her latest CD Mood Swing, which features a selection of Australian pop compositions by Ross Wilson, Nick Cave and Paul Kelly. As always you will hear some great ballad singing and a mixed bag of Blues and Grooves and a touch of Bossa. She swings, she moves and she always grooves. Come and hear her new stuff and some old favourites. Don't miss this special performance.

They are Don Walker, Neil Finn and Nick Cave, all diverse and individual musicians and performers in their own right. The recording to be released on the ABC Jazz label will see Frock exploring new territory adding its own style, humour and a deep sense of respect to 12 great Australian songs, which will have audiences seeing the songs in a new and fresh light. The performance at the Stonnington Jazz Festival will be the premier of "Father Son Holy Ghost".

Vince Jones  - Vince Jones & Friends

He has long been established as a headline act at festivals around Australia, he has toured in Europe, and has released 13 albums; the most recent is 'Moving Through Taboos' (Suitable/Universal).

Like his albums, Vince's concerts have increasingly emphasised his own songs, which tell stories or suggest ideas about the world we live in.  These are balanced with standards drawn from the jazz, blues, folk and pop traditions, rearranged to become very personal, heartfelt vehicles for Vince.
