Council elections - Background
In Victoria, general council elections are held every four years and it is compulsory to vote.
The next general council election will be held on 26 October 2024. Voting is by postal ballot - your ballot paper will come in the post from 7-10 October.
Council elections in Victoria are managed by the Victorian Electoral Commission.

Election campaign donations
The Local Government Act 2020 requires a summary of election campaign donations be made available on the Council website. Donations made for the 2020 election are shown below. Donations for the 2024 election will not be available until December 2024.

Election Period Policy
The Council has adopted an election period policy, also known as a caretaker period policy, which governs how the City of Stonnington interacts with the community during Council elections.
The election period runs from midday on Tuesday 17 September until 6pm on Saturday 26 October 2024.
Our policy limits certain activities during the election period, such as:
- making major policy decisions
- publishing or distributing electoral matter
- using council resources for election campaigning.
