Brendan Corr – Citizen of the Year – Community service

Brendan Corr has been volunteering with the Stonnington L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program since November 2012.

During his six and a half years he has dedicated more than 500 hours of supervised driving lessons with some of Stonnington’s most vulnerable young people. Brendan makes his way to Prahran Police Station, sometimes multiple times per week to teach young people aged between 16 and 20 how to become safe, courteous and responsible drivers on our roads.

As well as keeping roads safer, he acts as a powerful and positive role model in his students’ lives, as often these young people have no, or very few adult role models. With Brendan they have an ongoing support to help them reach their goals.

Young people Brendan has helped have gone on to use their licence to gain employment or an education and assist their families. Brendan has helped expectant mothers gain their licence before their baby arrives, people in foster care, young people living independently and many from single parent families who do not have the financial resources to afford driving lessons.

Supervising new drivers is a voluntary role that takes a very special person to fill and Brendan has fulfilled this role with exceptional generosity, and with a true passion to help young people succeed and move ahead in their lives.
