Tree Works Permit
Why is a Tree Work Permit required?
The City of Stonnington is known for its tree lined streets and established parks and gardens. With over 90% of the land in Stonnington being privately owned, private trees comprise a significant proportion of Stonnington’s urban forest. Tree Work Permits ensure that tree pruning and removal works are undertaken in a way that supports and sustains a safe, healthy and diverse urban forest.
When is Tree Work Permit required?
A Tree Work Permit must be obtained before a person removes, damages, kills or destroys a Significant Tree under the City of Stonnington General Local Law 2018 (No.1)(PDF, 2MB)
A Significant Tree is defined as a tree:
- with a trunk circumference of 180 centimetres or greater measured at its base
- with a total circumference of all its trunks of 180 centimetres or greater measured at its base
- with a trunk circumference of 140 centimetres or greater measured at 1.5 metres above its base
- with a total circumference of all its trunks of 140 centimetres or greater measured at 1.5 metres above its base.

If the property is subject to a recent Planning Application, with conditions that relate to trees, or is located within a Significant Landscape Overlay area, such as the Hedgeley Dene Precinct, a planning permit may be required to prune or remove trees. Applying for a Tree Work Permit
A Tree Work Permit is essential for each Significant Tree that requires pruning or removal, details for more than one tree can be included in a single Tree Work Permit application form(PDF, 45KB).
The applicant must provide:
- Tree Work Permit application and applicable fee
- proof of identity
- proof of property ownership (such as a rates notice)
Removal applications can only be applied for by the property owner.
If the tree(s) is located on managed by an Owner’s Corporation (OC), applications must include a letter of authorisation from the Property Manager, quoting the OC number and supporting the proposed tree works.

Assessment of the application will take approximately 15 business days to consider.
What permit conditions are likely to be included?
Permit conditions may include information relating to:
- type and extent of pruning works
- qualifications and insurance required by the person undertaking the works
- residential notifications for tree removals
- replacement trees for tree removal
- expiration date
What will happen if I do not have a permit and remove or destroy a significant tree?
Council has zero tolerance of the removal and destruction of Significant Trees without a permit. Builders, developers or property owners found responsible for the removal or destruction of significant trees without a Council Permit will be prosecuted at the Magistrates’ Court.
