South Ward Councillor Steve Stefanopoulos was re-elected for a third term as Mayor of the City of Stonnington and North Ward Councillor John Chandler was elected as Stonnington’s first Deputy Mayor at a Special Council meeting on Thursday 7 November.

Mayor Stefanopoulos has lived in Stonnington for over 40 years and is passionate about preserving its character, heritage and liveability. He served as an East Ward Councillor from 2004 until 2008. He returned to Council as a South Ward Councillor in 2016 and is looking to build on the achievements of this Council as it enters its fourth and final year of its term.

“With so much happening across our municipality it is an exciting time to be involved in local government and an honour and privilege to be re-elected as Mayor by my fellow Councillors,” Mayor Stefanopoulos said.

“This is the fourth year of this Council and we have delivered a lot for our community. Prahran Square is nearing completion and will be open in December, our Greville Street improvement works are looking great, we’ve secured Federal Government support for much needed indoor sport facilities, finalised a number of long term important strategies that will deliver for our community including Birth to 25 and Positive Ageing, hosted outstanding charity events for Very Special Kids and the Victorian Pride Centre and successfully traversed Victoria’s recycling crisis by securing a long term solution to avoid waste going to landfill.

“There’s more to be done and I can’t wait to get back to work. Key focus areas for the coming year will be implementing a food waste recycling program to further reduce what we send to landfill, delivering improvement works at Harold Holt Swim Centre, working with the State Government to improve the accessibility of Windsor train station and partnering with our trader associations to attract more outstanding businesses to Stonnington.

“This is on top of the huge number of programs and services that Council delivers on a daily basis, as Councillors we appreciate the work that officers do for our community.

“I also congratulate Cr John Chandler on his election as Deputy Mayor. Together we are committed to working to ensure Stonnington remains a place that people want to call home, to work in and to visit,” added Cr Stefanopoulos.
