Press Release | 11 May 2018
Join the City of Stonnington at the Prahran Market on Saturday 2 June to celebrate National Reconciliation Week.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, said Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to gather, celebrate and honour Stonnington’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
“Join us at Prahran Market for a day of activities to celebrate the vibrant culture of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” said Cr Stefanopoulos.
“The event will open with a traditional Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony delivered by our Traditional Owners.
“The team from Charcoal Lane, a social enterprise restaurant in Fitzroy, will then share Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recipes in the Prahran Market’s display kitchen.
“There will also be traditional dancing, didgeridoo and hip hop dance performances, as well as amazing artwork by artists from the nearby Prahran Community Learning Centre,” said Cr Stefanopoulos.
Stonnington sits on the land of the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.
The City of Stonnington respects the special relationship Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have with the land, and acknowledges their right to live according to their own values and customs, subject to Australian law. See stonnington.vic.gov.au/reconciliation for more information.
