Press Release | 17 October 2018
Stonnington Libraries is hosting a special event on 28 October to celebrate the reopening of Toorak/South Yarra Library, after its three-month closure to complete major building improvements.
Improvements to the library include new air-conditioning, lighting and public toilets, an updated children’s area to accommodate the increased growth of attendance in weekly children’s programs like Babytime Rhymes and Preschool Storytime, and an upgraded WiFi capability to accommodate the increased demand for fast, reliable internet for study and work.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, said he is excited to lead the festivities and welcome the community back to the newly-improved library.
“I am pleased and proud that one of our busiest and most popular libraries is ready to reopen to our community.
“It will be a fun and family-friendly afternoon that showcases the improved features of the Toorak/South Yarra Library. The building is one of the most notable Australian examples of international modern architecture, designed in 1973 by renowned Australian architects Yunken Freeman. The open plan, fully glazed black box which appears to be floating, is one of two highly-regarded piece of modern architecture owned by the Stonnington, and I invite you all to come along and visit us.
Our libraries are important community assets, where learning takes place and a love of books is born and nurtured,” said Mayor Stefanopoulos.
Activities on the day include special sessions of Babytime Rhymes and Preschool Storytime and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities for children, as well as hands-on demonstrations of the library’s range of digital services such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines and music and movie streaming.
Together with the reopening event, we will host the official Stonnington launch of the Libraries Change Lives project. This state-wide initiative, developed by the Public Libraries Victoria Network and State Library Victoria, aims to build community support for public libraries and highlight the economic and social benefits of public libraries.
