Swap, learn, make and mend at Stonnington’s Great Summer Clothes Swap!

The new year is a great time to refresh and refine your wardrobe and get your hands on some new quality threads that won’t cost the earth. Cue The Great Summer Clothes Swap ... where your unloved and unwanted clothes become currency for new clothes to love.

Keen op shoppers, swappers and anyone with an interest in responsible fashion are invited to join in our great swap and stay for hands-on workshops and make and mend sessions.

Event details 

Swapping clothes - swap it out, change it up!

Getting involved is easy!

  1. Bring along up to five quality items of clothing
  2. Exchange the clothes for swap tokens
  3. Use the tokens to ‘purchase’ new items

 12.30pm to 2.30pm

Throughout the day, Hannah Gray from The Clothing Cleanse and Jenna Flood from Ironic Minimalist will be available for styling advice. 

 Swap Rules 1. Swap tokens will only be exchanged for gently used or as-new items
  2. No faulty or stained clothing will be accepted
  3. Maximum five swap items per person

Talks from the Experts

12.30pm Curating a conscious wardrobe

Hear from sustainable fashion expert, Hannah Gray on how to curate the perfect wardrobe.  Hannah is a Melbourne based personal stylist with a passion for sustainable and ethical fashion.  With more than a decade of experience working in the fashion industry, Hannah will share her specialist knowledge on fit, fabric, colour and styling, together with her ambition to make positive change in people's lives through what they wear.

1.15pm Op shop styling

Join Ironic Minimalist and stylist supremo, Jenna Flood, as she shares her tips and tricks on styling your op shop fashion purchases. Jenna is the creative mind behind style blog Ironic Minimalist. She is passionate about raising awareness around fast fashion, and sharing her knowledge on how to become a more conscious shopper.

2pm Visible mending

Clothes with stains, holes and rips might not be fit to swap, but don't throw them out - make them better than new with visible mending, a fun, creative alternative to traditional mending. Professional mender, Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald will share stories and photographs from her mending makeovers, inspiring you to fall back in love with your worn-out clothes and bring them back to life!


Workshops

Drop in any time to enjoy hands-on activities, and see how easy it is to reduce your waste and live more simply.

Mend and Make: 12.30 to 4pm 
Mend your broken jewellery and make new pieces out of recycled materials.

You can do it! 12.30 to 2pm and 3 to 4pm 
Chat with Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald for clothes mending advice and encouragement.  An expert in her field, Erin will teach you where to find all the tools, information and support you need to get started on the trail to mending your own clothes.

Bees wax wraps: 12.30pm to 1pm, 1.30 to 2pm and 2 to 2.30pm
Let the gurus from Zero Waste Victoria show you how easy it is to make your own bees wax wraps, plus hear their tips and tricks to reduce your waste and environmental impact through simple lifestyle choices.

Keeping toys out of landfill, Stonnington Toy Library: 12.30 to 4pm  

Chat with staff and learn what toys, puzzles and games are appropriate for your child’s age and stage of development. Discover the many benefits of borrowing toys, which don't have to be bought or stored away and always have a good home after use.

We can provide interpreters at our events to communicate with our residents in community languages. If you are hard of hearing or have a speech impairment we can provide AUSLAN interpreters. To book an interpreter or find out more information please email environment@stonnington.vic.gov.au or call 8290 2051 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5pm). Please note these services must be booked in advance, a minimum of five days before the event date.
