Robot SPACEland is a must-see FREE open air exhibition that’s landed in Melbourne’s iconic metropolis, Chapel Street Precinct!
Frankly, last year has felt like something fresh out of a sci-fi novel (albeit one we would have liked to return to the library after the first couple of chapters). But in the spirit of out-of-this-world experiences, strap yourself in because Chapel Street Precinct is set to become home to a ship-load of jaw-dropping and mind-boggling guests in the New Year!
As if a slew of breathtaking bars, eateries and stores isn’t enough, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be adding an army of larger-than-life space robots to the mix between 14 – 31 January, 2021.
These ‘guests’ will be commandeering four unique locations within the precinct – Grattan Gardens, Prahran Square, the Chapel Off Chapel forecourt and 402 Chapel Street South Yarra (construction site) – each robot more impressive and colossal than the next.
Measuring up to 17 metres in height, each of these interactive displays of intergalactic awe will grab your attention by day and take your breath away by night.
Get ready for vibrant lights, electric energy, upcycled masterpieces, and streets of FREE family fun. And don’t forget to charge your phones, because this is one Instagram opportunity you won’t want to miss.
Robot SPACEland is one small step for man, but one giant fortnight of fun for all of Melbourne-kind.
Meet the robots
402 Chapel St, South Yarra (Enter via Bray St)
Made largely of upcycled materials Eco Bot is the ultimate recycling machine, crushing cars to create building blocks for a new city. Self-generating the power needed to sustain the work here on earth she commands a band of worker bots. Towering 17 metres above the city scape Eco Bot looms overhead, lights illuminated – a beacon of hope in the dark.
EcoBot is easily able to be viewed from the street during the day. To get closer at night, the site is open from 7.30pm (enter via Bray Street).
Arch of Evolution
Chapel Off Chapel Forecourt (Princess Gardens, Essex St, Prahran)
The busy robots toil and hustle to complete their mission. They never tire and must never stop until their work is complete. They have been sent here by Eco Bot to teach the people of earth how to look after the planet. Humans must learn these ways or there will be no evolution of the human species, and no hope to save the planet.
Barrel of Transformation
Prahran Square (Centre Square)
From a pile of scrap metal emerges a band of sentient worker bots. Their transformation complete, they must finish their mission – to help the people of earth learn how to save their planet from extinction.
Grattan Gardens (Greville Street Lawns, Prahran)
Millions of light years from home, the Spaceship touches down on earth while on an interplanetary journey of discovery. Custom projection mapped visuals tell the story of life in its home galaxy and shares this with the people of earth.

City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Kate Hely said Council is thrilled to bring the Robots to the City:
We are delighted to partner with the Chapel Street Precinct to bring this fantastic exhibition to the City of Stonnington and our iconic Chapel Street. Standing up to an impressive 17-metres, the Robots are awe-inspiring to get close to and it will be wonderful to see people’s reactions to them.
There is no better place to be invaded by Robots than in one of the City’s best locations to live, work, stay and play – Chapel Street. This COVIDSafe, family friendly experience is a must see!
Ms Chrissie Maus, General Manager of the Chapel Street Precinct said:
It’s never been more important to supercharge into the New Year and support our beloved local businesses – they’re the heart and soul of Chapel Street Precinct.
And so we’ve literally reached into a new stratosphere of creativity to bring our huge Robot SPACEland activation to life in partnership with the City of Stonnington.
We can’t wait to introduce these larger-than-life intergalactic displays to Melburnians in January, and hopefully steer them towards reviving the local businesses around them!
Presented by City of Stonnington - supported by Chapel Street Precinct.
