Opening Address: The importance of story

In the Festival’s opening address, award-winning writer Alice Pung considers the importance of story, and we announce the winners of the What’s Your Story? Writing competition.

Alice Pung is a writer and lawyer who loves teaching. Alice’s books are studied in secondary schools and universities in Australia as well as the United States. Alice is an Ambassador for the 100 Story Building Project, a social enterprise which helps promote literature and literacy skills to young people in the Western suburbs. Alice is a frequent contributor to The Monthly, The Age and The Australian newspapers. She has also had stories published in Good Weekend, Meanjin and The Best Australian Stories.
