The Mayor City of Stonnington, Cr Steve Stefanopoulos, has handed over a cheque for over $65,000 to the Victorian Pride Centre following this year’s Night of Pride Mayoral Charity Fundraisers.

The sold-out event featured performances from the LGBTIQ+ community and a spectacular range of auction items donated by leading Stonnington businesses.

Cr Stefanopoulos said he was thrilled by the fundraising amount and humbled by the generosity shown by the Stonnington community.

“The night was a celebration of this wonderfully diverse and inclusive community, and showed what we can do when we put our minds to it,” he said.

“The Victorian Pride Centre is a fantastic organisation that provides a safe space committed to supporting equality, diversity and inclusion for Melbourne’s LGBTIQ+ community. It will be a significant piece of community infrastructure and an important leader in progressing LGBTIQ+ agenda not just in Victoria and Australia, but internationally.

“This donation is possible because of the generosity of our community, and I personally thank all the businesses who provided items for auction, Council and Pride Centre staff and of course the wonderful entertainers who donated their time.”

Jude Munro AO, Chair of the Victorian Pride Centre, said: “On behalf of the Victorian Pride Centre, I cannot thank the Stonnington community and Mayor enough for this significant contribution to Australia’s first Pride Centre. It will help ensure a welcoming, inclusive and safe space for LGBTIQ communities.

“The monies raised will contribute to the fit out and furniture of Pride Centre’s ground floor theatrette, a vibrant multi-purpose space able to host a variety of activities and performances, all day, every day. We look forward to welcoming Stonnington residents to the theatre they have helped create.”
