The State Government has extended the deadline for registrations of existing swimming pools and spas. Residents now have until 1 November 2020 to register.

These new regulations respond to coronial investigations which found that faulty and unsafe pool barriers had contributed to the deaths of children in backyard pools.

Residents are required to:

  • register their pool and spa with the City of Stonnington
  • have their safety barrier inspected once every four years.

The regulations bring Victoria in line with other states: Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, which already have mandatory pool and spa regulations and inspections.

Stonnington Mayor Cr Steve Stefanopoulos said it is vital that residents use this extended deadline to bring them in line with the regulations.

'Council takes pool and spa safety in our community very seriously and I remind all pool and spa owners to be up-to-date with current State Government requirements by registering their pools and spas.'

He also thanked the many residents who have already lodged their applications, 'We have about 80% of pools and spas registered – which is pleasing to see – and I would like to thank the owners who have taken the time to go through the application process. The registration process is easy to do, and all relevant information is readily available on Council’s website.'

With warmer weather approaching and more families staying at home due to COVID-restrictions, it is important for our community to maintain pool and spa safety.

'I urge you to be vigilant and always supervise young children in and around water, pools and spas,' said Mayor Stefanopoulos.
