The Aussie Backyard Bird Count begins next week, with residents invited to keep track of all the different varieties of birds in the Stonnington area.

The initiative from BirdLife Australia is designed to allow greater collection of data about birds across the country during a single range of time – like a census for birds.

Running from 18-24 October 2021, participating in the count is simple. Just spend 20 minutes in a single spot and note all the birds you see, then either upload your count through the online form or submit it via the Aussie Bird Count app.

It doesn’t even need to be in your backyard either. You can go to a park, garden, or trail and still participate in the count - you just need to remain in the same spot for the 20 minutes of counting time.

There are a number of prizes on offer from BirdLife Australia for participating in the count (see www.aussiebirdcount.org.au for more details).

So set aside some time next week and keep your eyes on the skies for each magpie, cockatoo, and pigeon flying by!
