Crisp air, turning leaves and the welcome warmth of an indoor pool. Autumn is the season to build your child’s swimming skills before the summer rush.

For Stonnington mother of three, Sandy, enrolling her children in swimming lessons is part of growing up in Australia.

“So much of our life [is] centred around beaches, pools and holidays,” Sandy said.

“We wanted swimming to be a natural and essential life skill for all [our children].”

That’s why Sandy enrolled all three of her children at age two in the Learn to Swim program at the Harold Holt Swim Centre.

“Water safety is so important to our family,” Sandy said.

“Before lessons, Chloe, Marcus and Kiara were like most toddlers – cautious around water and very dependent on us.”

But through parent-in-the-water, play-based lessons, Sandy’s children learnt to feel safe in the water and build independence.

Ripples of progress

As the children have grown, so have their achievements. “These are the moments where you really see how far they’ve come from those early days in the baby pool,” Sandy said.

“Learn to Swim has helped turn the water into a place they genuinely love being. They’re relaxed, confident and aware, and they approach pools and the beach with excitement rather than hesitation, while still understanding the importance of safety.”

Why early swimming matters

With water woven into so much of Australian life – from backyard pools to summer holidays – Sandy believes early swimming lessons are one of the most valuable investments families can make.

“They give families peace of mind, build confidence and safety from an early age, and create pathways for lifelong skills.” Her message to families considering enrolling?

“Start early and stick with it. The confidence, safety and love of the water children gain through swimming lessons are truly invaluable.”

“As a new dad, I’m taking in all the firsts, which makes me excited for what’s ahead. I can’t wait for my daughter to feel confident in the water – and programs like this help families get there.” - Cr Jamie Bell, Tooronga Ward
