For Stonnington resident Jennifer Waterson, her wedding day didn’t begin with hairspray or champagne, but by swimming laps at Harold Holt Swim Centre.
That morning, in 1985, was the beginning of two enduring loves – one with husband, John, and the other with the centre that has anchored their family through four decades of life.
Jenn and John’s initial interest in lap swimming at Harold Holt Swim Centre has expanded over the years, with the two now enjoying gym sessions and group classes too.
“We attend four or five mornings a week and swim most Sundays,” Jenn said.
“We love all our dedicated instructors who encourage us to keep up our programs.”
Jenn and John’s three children also learned to swim at Harold Holt Swim Centre, with two competing at state level and joining swim squad.
“Those two children went on to work at the centre in various roles for many years – as lifeguards, on reception, in the cafe, and one as a duty supervisor,” Jenn said.
“They made many friends who they’re still friends with today.”
More than a pool
“We love our gym community,” Jenn said.
“It gets us up every morning. We’re continually amazed by the dedication of [these] people, from their 30s to their 80s, who front up to put our bodies and minds through these workouts.”
After class, many wander to a local cafe on High Street for coffee and conversation. At Christmas, they gather to celebrate another year of health, friendship and shared effort.
“We’ve made lovely friends and we look out for each other,” Jenn said. “We feel we belong.”
“If you’re thinking about joining Harold Holt but are unsure if it’s for you… there are so many ways to get involved – from lap swimming to the gym to group fitness classes. Who knows, you might end up at one of our Christmas parties soon.”
