Cultural Diversity Week (21-29 March) is a time to celebrate the power, influence, and stories of our rich multicultural communities.

This year’s theme is “culture connects us all” and invites us to share our intercultural experiences and perspectives to foster understanding, belonging and connection.

Our librarians share their recommended reads, from children’s stories celebrating diversity and inclusivity, to powerful essays of identity and belonging, First Nations perspectives on Country and culture, and novels that remind us that we all share common dreams and struggles.

Get involved in one of the many programs and events taking place across the week:

  • Author Adelle Frittitta will read aloud My Nonno Loves in a special Storytime that celebrates Italian culture, family ties, and the beauty in small things. Saturday 21 March, 10.30am, Malvern Library
  • During our regularly scheduled Storytime sessions, we’ll read aloud stories that celebrate the different people, families and cultures that make up our community. 23-25 March, 10.30am
  • Come along to the March session of Classic Short Reads Book Club for a discussion on Mrs Spring Fragrance by Sui Sin Far. This 1912 short story follows a married Chinese couple living in America at the turn of the century. Tuesday 31 March, 2pm, Toorak/South Yarra Library
  • Experience the beat of Stonnington! Celebrate the sounds, flavours, and spirit of Stonnington at Stonnington Rhythm and Culture, a free multicultural festival at Prahran Square. Saturday 21 March, 12-6pm, Prahran Square
