Get ready to dive into books this summer with the BIG Summer Read.

Keep reading over the summer school holidays for your chance to win prizes. It’s as easy as Join. Borrow. Read. Win!

Participation is free and open to all Victorians aged 0 to 18 years.

Join: Register for the BIG Summer Read and make sure you select Stonnington Library and Information Service as your local library. Children under 13 years will need consent from a parent/guardian.

Borrow: Books, eBooks, audiobooks, graphic novels and more.

Read: Five or more books or read for 5 days or more – any and all reading counts.

Win: Log your reading by 31 January 2026 for your chance to win a prize. There are national, statewide and local prizes to be won! 

Visit our libraries to pick up a paper journal (or download here(PDF, 5MB)) and collect bookmarks with recommended reads selected by the BIG Summer Read Ambassadors.

Who can participate?

Anyone aged 0-18 years and residing in Victoria can join the BIG Summer Read.

The program is aimed mostly towards primary-school aged children but is open to anyone under the age of 18 years.

Independent and non-independent readers can log any book they read, that is read to them, or listened to as an audio. 

Prizes

There are national, statewide and local prizes to be won.

National Prize Draw

The National Prizes will be drawn at random from the pool of eligible participants in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria. One winner from each age category of registered users who have completed the requirements of the Big Summer Read will be selected. Prizes include:

  1. 0-4 years age category – Picture Book Bundle Pack
  2. 5-8 years age category – Books and Activity Pack
  3. 9-12 years age category – Bluetooth Headphones
  4. 13-18 years age category – Kobo eReader

Statewide Prize Draw

Participants who register and complete the challenge on the ReadBooks website by 31 January 2026 will be automatically entered into the Statewide Prize Draw.

The Statewide Prizes will be drawn at random from the pools of eligible Victorian entries submitted, provided they’ve completed the challenge requirements. For each of the following age categories, there will be one 12-month Zoos Victoria Family Membership (2 adults and all children in 1 household) and one book pack:

  1. 0-4 years
  2. 5-8 years
  3. 8-12 years
  4. 13-18 years

Stonnington Prize Draw

Participants who also complete the paper Reading Journal and Reading Bookmark will be automatically entered into the local Stonnington Prize Draw.

Pick up a paper reading journal from any Stonnington Library or download a copy(PDF, 5MB). Return the paper Reading Journal or Reading Bookmark to any Stonnington Library by 9 February 2026 and you’ll automatically be entered into our local prize draw.

Prizes include:

  1. Village Cinemas Family Movie Passes (2 adults, 2 children; valued at $70 each)
  2. Digital Polaroid Camera pack (valued at $118)
  3. Jeffreys Books vouchers (valued at $50 each)
  4.  Family Swim Passes to Stonnington pools (2 adults, 2 children; valued at $24.40 each)

Privacy Policy and Data Collection

BIG Summer Read is a state-wide reading program for Victorians aged 0-18 years that runs from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2026 (Program). The Program encourages children and young people to read for pleasure over the summer school break. Council is running the Program through its libraries and encouraging users to register to participate in the Big Summer Read challenge.

We will collect the following Personal Information to administer the Program: your/your child's full name, email address, password, year of birth and your primary local library (Personal Information).

The Personal Information will be used to:

  • administer, evaluate and report on the Program;
  • enable you and your child to enrol in the Program and record the books read;
  • contact you about the Program; and
  • deliver a prize to you if you enter the prize draw and are selected as a winner.

Council will disclose your Personal Information to its Program partner, Public Libraries Victoria (PLV). PLV may also share your Personal Information to its partners, which include the School Library Association Victoria, StoryBox Library, Bolinda BorrowBox, James Bennet and uLibrary.

If you do not provide your Personal Information you will not be eligible to participate in the Program.
