JAHM-Insta-Template1

Join David Thomas, Emeritus Professor in the School of Art, for his talk: THE MOVEMENT OF COLOUR Locating the contemporary monochrome.

David will reflect on how the monochrome can help us understand relationship between content and materiality, and something and nothing. He will discuss how we ascribe value, in relation to monochrome painting.

On Nothing and the movement of meaning between East and West.

"Artworks like life have multiple layers of content and we need time to unpack them as viewers. I wish in this talk to unpack ideas in relation to MONOCHROME PAINTING. It is I believe a useful genre through which to consider complexity, time and perception. In doing so I will consider some similarities and differences between the approaches and practices of MONOCHROME PAINTING IN THE EAST AND THE WEST. I will reflect on how the monochrome can assist us in considering the relationship between content and materiality, between something and nothing, and importantly help us to understand to what and how we ascribe value."
